Philadelphia Inquirer- October: Arts Section, Weekend Edition

come on In

"The heavyweight of POST's second weekend is 915 Spring Garden St., a hulking warehouse for the old Reading Railroad converted into studios where 44 artists will show work. Start in Studio 420 with Ben Schwab, 28, whose vast cityscape paintings capture something photography cannot: a city hovering between past and present. On the canvas, Schwab erects a ghostly armature of architectural lines on which to hang his buildings, tan, white and red, which are themselves ghosts trying to become solid. The effect is quietly absorbing, and this is Schwab's goal."                -Matt Blanchard

An inside Look: Philadelphia Studios Open Their Doors

"Schwab generally paints large-scale urban landscapes in oil on canvas.  He has smaller drawings and paintings for sale as well at his studio at 915 Spring Garden Street, Studio 420.  His works-in-progress entail beautifully executed scenes from the Philadelphia area and other major cities."            -Jan Feighner

Tape, Hair, Salt All Part of Unique Art Exhibit: 'Fever Pitch' New work from the center for emerging visual artists at Delaware art museum

"Ben Schwab's 'Poplar' is the most imposing piece-- actually it merges four canvas pieces into one 240-inch-wide, 90-inch-tall panoramic view of composite Philadelphia rooftops.  Schwab, whose charcoal study of 'Poplar' is on an adjacent wall, has a knack for recreating depth.  Viewed from a comfortable distance, 'Poplar', which is vibrant for a cityscape thanks to its blue sky, makes it easy to imagine leaping from rooftop to rooftop."            -Christopher Yasiejko
